When the Weather is Too Much for the Sewage Plant

When the Weather is Too Much for the Sewage Plant

The northwest part of the United States sees a significant amount of rainfall. With that rainfall can come major flooding or area rivers, lakes, roads, basements, etc. Crescent City, California recently experienced major flooding that wreaked havoc on its sewage treatment plant. The treatment plant was pushing 8 to 10 million gallons of wastewater per day for three days. Due to these overflows, the city had to release less than 5,000 gallons of partially treated sewage into the bay next to the plant. The plant is capable of handling a large rain event, it’s located in the northwest for that

Sacramento’s Heavy Rain and Unstable Pipeline Cause Sewer Overflow

The city of Sacramento has experienced record rainfall within the last several months. This has led to unfortunate sewer overflow within the Sacramento-area wastewater systems.  The local waterways took the brunt of the complications from the spill.  The waterway which was primarily affected is Hangtown Creek, flowing into the American River. The overflow had environmental ramifications due to contaminants; which were recently found in the creek. The polluted sections of the creeks are rural, and mostly without nearby development. The pipeline running along Hangtown Creek carries sewage from homes and businesses to the city’s treatment plant. The overflow also occurred

Sacramento Spares No Expense in Sewer Overhaul

Sacramento is expecting to increase their water and sewer rates this year. The rate increases would take place July 1 of this year and would raise the average residential customer’s bill from $68.15 a month, which calculates to approximately $98.60 by 2019. The higher rates would finance $265.5 million in water projects and $53.5 million in sewer projects by 2020. The city plans to install 42,600 water meters and replace 76 miles of related pipes, and rehab four miles of sewer pipes and 10 pump stations.  The biggest expense will be $230 million to finish installing water meters in 2020.

City of Millbrae Raises Sewer Rates

Residents of Millbrae will sustain an increase to their sewer bill.  Members of City council voted this week for the much needed raise, due to the cost of mandatory sewer infrastructure repairs.  This change is required, in part, due to an ever aging underground infrastructure, but mainly due to the City’s obligation to pay for water laden with bacteria that leaked into the bay over 5 years ago.  This change will be implemented immediately and will increase the monthly bill structure by approximately $15.  The current plan has yearly increases scheduled through 2019.  While some were dismayed, many residents in

Sacramento’s Pipeline Pinhole Leaks

It’s true that there are many dimensions to California’s underground infrastructure, in general. But there’s something else to consider, as well, Sacramento. What about homes built prior to the 1960’s? If you have an older home, chances are it was constructed with galvanized pipe. This is essentially steel pipe protected with a layer of Zinc which will eventually corrode the pipe. This can cause a pitting corrosion or pinhole leaks through the pipe which can look like this: This type of corrosion can be difficult to detect as the damage occurs from the inside out, and quickly, at that. This
