The city of Sacramento has been conducting financial assessments for several major sewer renovations, which will include a new water meter program. Homeowners will experience rate changes, with the first taking effect this summer. In addition to a bill increase, there will be an assistance program in place to help qualifying residents with their payments. The Utility Rate Assistance Program expansion is a plan to help income-eligible Sacramento households save approximately $360 a year on their utility costs. Rehabilitation projects have fostered the startup of this customer support initiative. The agenda includes the Accelerated Water Meter Program, to be completed by the end of 2020. Placing the entire city on water meters will not only improve water conservation, but comply with regulations and ensure reasonable billing for all customers. The city recognizes the importance of repairing and replacing old, aging pipelines, pump stations and other facilities. The improvements to separate and combine sewer system pipelines, and the construction of a large underground combined wastewater storage facility in the McKinley Park area, will be the core objectives. The average residential customer will see the rate adjustment increase their monthly bill for water and wastewater services by $6.59 in year one, $7.23 in year two, $7.93 in year three and $8.70 in year four.
